Hi there,
I bought Windows XP Professional today but I cannot get it to install, every time it runs the hardware checker I get the following error message
"Your computer has hardware devices that prohibit you from upgrading
to Windows XP.
Conflicting Devices
Setup has detected an incompatibility between your video card &
computer's mainboard. Because of this, your computer may not
start up after the upgrade. Contact the manufacturer of your
hardware for technical assistance."
However I replaced my Maxi Gamer Cougar card with the card I got with my PC ( an SiS 6326 based card), yet the error still persists. I asked the store where I bought the PC about it and they insist it's rubbish, especially since it's claiming it for the shipped card as well.
My system specs are:-
AMD K6-2 450
160mb RAM
4gb H/drive
40x CD ROM
8mb SiS 6326 Graphics Card
Hercules Gamesurround Muse XL sound card
M5ALC system board
BIOS ALC0617B
I am almost at my wits end , surely there must be some solution, hopefully someone here has it!
thanks in advance!
James

James,

are you trying to upgrade from your current windows or a fresh install from ground up ?

i would do is to back up what you need and do a boot to cd install
by then winxp should let you know if you able to run it
or use a spare hard drive to test it out first

i do not see any problem of your system
AMD and VIA do have some issue with some software, but not for basic windows

good luck

I would agree with backing up your important files and then doing a fresh install of XP. Reason being, doing an upgrade usually causes problems sooner or later.

Hope this helps.

Aloha,

Chas
