I installed xp on a dell system. I then removed the hard drive to use it in another system. Now when i boot it goes to the command window which has safe mode, Last known good..., normal mode, etc etc. It seems since i installed it on a different system with different hardware it doesn't like the new hardware. I think its something with the HAL. how can i get Windows up and running again on this new system without reinstalling it.

also.. why isn't it possible to move an xp hard drive to any other computer system?

Your current WinXP installation HD info is only based on your Dell motherboard/software etc..once you put this HD onto another system (most likely this other system hardware is totally different from the Dell system) it won't recognize it. If you want winxp on your other sytem you would have to simply format the HD or buy a new HD and do a clean winxp install

As jiggy says, it's down to the fact of the HD info being based on your Dell system, so when you put it in another system...it won't work! I have had that happen to me before.

But if you were to put it in another dell, or a system with the same motherboard...it may work. But for me, it has failed more times than it has worked...I don't often try it these days because at the time, I did not know the reason why.

Before you go reformatting it again, put it in the machine thats having the problem, and use the Windows XP Recovery console, and run the 'chkdsk /r' command, this may help.

Otherwise, you could do an "in place upgrade" (reinstallation) of XP, which will reinstall the OS but not affect your programs...however, you will need to reinstall any updates released after your version of XP was made!

every time xp loads (or attempts to load), hardware profile which is in wpa.dbl is checked against what is on the machine. they include, display adapter, hdd id string, nic mac address, ram, cpu serial number, cd hardware id string, system volume id string, scsi host atapter hardwar id string, ....
when there's a conflict, it will not boot.
