XP Home Windows V5 Update Problems

I have recently reloaded XP Home on a Dell LT using the included CD. I do not have options on the machine for Auto Update included. When I try using the link to MS Update site it directs me to the V5 site and then stops. I cannot get the screen or process updates. It says looking or reading from client and then just stalls. I tried the V4 link and it redirects to V5. I was able to get the updates using the Admin links but why does the V5 not work?

1. Check C:\Windows\Windows Update.log for specific errors and post them back here.

2. Things to try:

Delete IUCTL.DLL and IUENGINE.DLL from %windir%\system32\dllcache (if they are there).
Delete IUCTL.DLL and IUENGINE.DLL from %windir%\system32
folder.

Note: On XP, System File protection will prompt you to place the XP CD in your drive; do not do that but
choose to cancel or skip that part.

In Regedit (very carefully):
Delete the sub-key "SelfupdateStatus" (if present) in the HKEY LOCAL MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\IUControl key.

Now download the latest win update controls:
and save theme into a new folder. Extract the cab by:
1. Right clicking on the iuctl.cab
2. Select "Extract" -- point to %windir%\system32 folder and click Ok
3. Use Windows Explorer, and "right click" on the * IUCTL.INF file.
4. Select "install".
5. You must restart the system.

Thanks, I will check on this. I do not have the unit currently and am getting ready for a vacation so It might be a while before I post back results.
