I have a Linksys router with VPN client account configured at my office. At home I have a Windows XP Home connection. The Office is only a peer to peer network.

I know that there are a lot of "networking" functionality lost in Windows XP Home edition; forcing one to purchase XP Pro. Is VPN one of those functions that do not work with the Home Editions?

I attempted to connect to my office's Linksys router's IP Public IP address using my VPN Client that I created yet was unable to attain a link. Stated that the VPN server was unattainable or off line or something to that effect.

Is there a port that needs to be forwarded from my Linksys router to the Windows XP Pro computer that houses the software?

Thank you.

Dan

Check this site out if you'd like a little bit of training on Linksys VPN setup. Maybe a bit basic, don't know cause I didn't fully read it. :+p

Maybe someone else may chime in here to give you a heads up on more advance setup issues to keep a watchful eye on as well as your Port forwarding question.

Good Luck!

If the router supports it (not all linksys models do), the QuickVPN client is the easist set-up. It's a free download from the Linksys website, if it is used for your particular model.

oaky. I installed the QuickVPN client on the two remote windows XP Home computers. these are connected to a DSL via a Cayman router from like 1980-something... it's old.

Anyway, neither of these clients are able to connect to my VPN router at the main office. I verified that the IP address of the VPN router.

Is there some sort of port forwarding that I need to do on my VPN router? Could it be that the Cayman router at the remote site will not handle VPN outbound?

Inquiring minds want to know....

dunno, Linney. I'll have to check that ancient Cayman router that is in place.
