Hi there

I just had a new PC delivert with XP Home pre-installed. Everything seemed fine, until I noticed that XP seems to be rather slow. I cannot install any Software, because not one setup.exe works on XP (Not to mention autorun). Also, I cannot run CMD or open the Task Manager. I tried SP2, but this didn't solve this either. There is nothing in the system logs and all services that need be running are also ok.
Any Ideas?

Thanks a lot.

You have malware. See this discussion:
1. Uninstall SP2. It can only complicate things at this moment.

2. Run two online antivirus scans: Trend Micro and Panda are good choices:
Service Pack 2 is not a repair for XP problems. It should only be installed on workstations that are running XP without issues.

Thanks

I thought it might be something on that line. Unfortunatly, it also killed my Internet connection, therefore, I propably have no other choice as to format the HDD and start from scratch.

Thanks a lot for your help on this.

Some of the following may work for you:

. Hit F8 early and often at startup and try to access the internet with Safe Mode with Networking option;

. On another machine download:

Stinger

F-Prot for DOS (if you have a FAT filestore)

These will fit on a floppy or CD-R. Run them on your machine.

. Use the rename trick to access regedit and MSCONFIG:
Then disable all startup items. Reboot and see if you can access the internet.

. Make one of these on a friend's computer: WinUBCD
Use the antivirus tools included to clean your system.

Success.

Stinger was able to remove the Virus and ever since, everthing works fine. Now I got Anti Virus and firewall in place, and hopefully this system should run fine.
Amazing is that I only accessed Yahoo/BT internet to download the software for internet access. This shouldn't happen.
Thanks for your help with this.
