Im wondering if there is a way to give only specific users access to a shared network folder in a peer to peer network with XP home edition? I can share folders no problem at all BUT I only want a few users to have access to this certain folder. This share is on an external USB hard drive.

Thanks a million in advance!

Logon in Safe Mode as Administrator. You will then have access to the Security tab for the Folder by right-clicking it and selecting Properties.

I did try that but still unable to give permissions to specific users. Im sure Im missing something here just dont know what :)

Thanks

. add the users as new local users using the same usernames and passwords as used on their workstations to the omputer hosting the USB drive;

. Then add the localgroup Guest, and give it no permissions. Add the new users you added above and given them appropriate permissions.

I will give this a shot and let you know, Im assuming you dont have to be part of a domain to do this because home edition you cant join a domain correct?

Thanks a lot again and I will let you know how I make out

I was hoping there for a sec :) Thanks for the link, that is one idea I did have.. setting up a hidden folder and sharing it. But that of course isnt the most secure option in the world :) I was hoping there might be some other solution like a third party app or something anything

Thanks again

Zack

I am presently working on a Dell XP Home Edition machine, which I had to rebuild due to malware. Before I reinstalled, I had access to the security tab for file and directory security just like the Pro edition, I was changing user permission constantly yesterday, with a regular startup.
From googling, everything states Home Edition does not have expanded file security unless in safe mode, not true. There must be registry settings tweaks to allow it. Anyone know of them.

It is true.
The only good workaround for XP Home is one I discussed a while ago by Doug Knox, MS-MVP and others:

Thanks...

My client bought this machine for home use, Dell must have enabled the security, as my client only knows how to click on items.

Doug Knox has this available too (first link) which can come in handy on XP Home edition.

If you have a NTFS partition try these links to beef up Home to something more configurable that you may be able to use to block access.

I have an XP home machine where none of the users (incl. admin rights user) can access the "run" or "search" commands. Any ideas how this happened & how to get it back as administrator?

FireWired,

What do you mean by Access? Are the options available or is access denied?

See what boxes you have checked in the Taskbar and Start Menu Properties/ Start Menu/ Customize.

This might be handy.
