Hi eveybody
I have put on a wireless network 3 machines (2desktops & a laptop). All Belkin equipment.
When I configure the Router/Gateway for internet use, it tells me that ADSL cable IS connected (with all the "ordnary IP addresses" gateway, WAN,etc.) but I still cannot access the internet on any of the machines. No message, just the ordianry "This page cannot...". The wireless network itself works perfectly.

PS: My ADSL line was functionning perfectly well when it was directly connected to one PC.

Thanks for your help

1. try pinging stuff -
a. choose a machine to ping from
b. ping it's own IP
c. ping the router's IP
d. ping another machine's IP
e. ping yahoo.com
f. ping 66.218.71.198 (yahoo's IP)

this will tell you where the broken link in the chain is.

My first guess is it's a MAC issue - your cable modem has restricted the internet to just the MAC that was originally connected. The fix is to use the Belkin Router's MAC Cloning feature - you'll need to enter the MAC of the original PC.

Hi Manarth
Thanks for the tips.
Unfortunately, I had already tried this. I can ping my pC, other PCs, the router but neither the modem nor any of the outside addresses.
As to the MAC address, this has been taken care of too when configuraing the router the first time.
Any other idea please?
Thanks
Best regards

a quick easy way to see what step would fix it.

1. recycle power to the dsl modem then do the same to the router. check things out.
2. very helpfull. call tech support and ask them if they can see anything past the dsl modem. make sure to have the MAC ID of the router and if they say "yes", ask them the MAC ID of it and compare with the one you wrote down from the router. what this does is let you know if the router is even seen from the outside and if so, you know its a router setting. it also will allow you to find out if you need to contact support to change the MAC when adding devices. remember not to tell them about it being a router, just say its a new pc. if they say to release and renew the adaptor, just recycle power to the router.

good luck

Machpro,

With only 1 wired machine connected to the Belkin router, go into the router setup page.

1. Make sure it is configured to obtain an address automatically, and that the appropriate authentication information is provided. For cable systems it is often the name of the ISP.

2. Make sure the device is set to "Gateway" and not "Router" mode, and that DHCP is enabled.

3. On the status page for the router, write down the DNS addresses you should see there.

4. Exit the setup page. Right-click on your connection icon, Properties, TCP/IP, Properties, and set it to obtain an IP address automatically. For DNS put the DNS entries you wrote down in Step#3, and make an additional last entry the IP of the Gateway, e.g. 192.168.1.1. Now click the "Advanced" button, and under default gateway enter the ip of the router/Gateway, Under the WINS tab enable tcp/ip over Netbios, disable the use of LMHOSTS.
Save the settings and exit to the desktop.

5. Start, run, CMD and hit enter
IPCONFIG /RELEASE
IPCONFIG /RENEW
EXIT

6. Now type ping It should ping okay.

7. Repeat Steps 4-5 on each of the other machines, and connect them to the router/Gateway.

Hi bcastner
Thanks for the tips.
I have tried them all but unfortunatly, I still cannot access the Internet. I'm turning mad!
On the Gateway/Router, it indicates
1) Under "Internet"
Cable/DSL: Connected
WAN IP: 198.168.2.2
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.252
Gateway IP: 192.168.2.1
DNS: 192.168.2.1
2) Under "Gateway":
IP adress: 192.168.2.1
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
DHCP: enabled
When I am connected directly via my Ethernet card the Modem indicates:
PPPoE Autodial and I have to input a username and a password (provided by my ISP) and everything works perfectly.
However, when I attempt to use the router, if I use "PPPoE" it indicates the internet staus as "disconnected". If I use dynamic IP it shows "connected". Can you explain this please?
In order to try to solve the problem, I configure my PC to be the internet host (ehternet card) and the network through the wireless network. But in that case, the client computers do not see the host (although I get an 192.168.2.1 address).
Any clue on how to do?
Thanks a lot
Best regards

PS: I have dumps of my screens but I cannot join them. Should you wish to have a look, please give me an e-mail address.

Your modem is equipped to act as an authentication site for your DSL service. It is also acting as a DHCP server, a DNS proxy, and a NAT service.

So is, by default, your router.

Look in the instructions for your modem. You want to put it into "Bridge" mode. Access the modem at address 192.168.2.1 and disable it authentication service, its DHCP service, etc. and enable "Bridge" mode.

Then go into your router setup and put in your authentication information, set it to PPoE, and have DHCP enabled, and Gateway not router mode.

Done.
