I'm sorry that I'm asking about XP Home but since there IS a solution for XP Pro, it's Home-specific.

I have XP Home on our family PC. Last night, my daughter was working on a project and had several applications and browser windows open and wanted them left that way so that in the morning, she could pick up where she left off.

This morning, in the system tray, there was a message stating that the PC had been restarted due to a security update that was vital to protecting the PC (or something like that).

In the past, we used to get the messages that an update was applied and that the system needed to be restarted. It would pop up every minute or so, and if you were working on something and couldn't stop at the moment, you had to keep cancelling. In XP Home, there wasn't a way to disable this. I assumed that an update was applied that cut down on the frequency of this, because we haven't seen it in awhile.

So, the restart was unexpected and I was wondering if there was a way to disable the auto restart in XP Home. A lot of time has passed and I didn't know if there was finally a way to do this. We restart the PCs every day (usually at night so they are off all night) so the security setting would have been applied soon enough. I think we should have a say over when we want to restart.

Thank you for your help and again, I'm sorry for posting a question about XP Home.

Check your Automatic Updates configuration, you may find a setting that's more suitable to your needs.

You can try this XP Home Reg Fix as you will not have Group Policy in XP Home.

"For the guy with Windows XP Home...

1. Copy the text below into Notepad. Save it with a .reg extension. Open and confirm that you want to copy the data into your registry.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU]
"RebootRelaunchTimeoutEnabled"=dword:00000000
"NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers"=dword:00000001

That was from this long article.

XP Automatic Update Nagging

Personally I have Windows set to notify but not download updates. I then download and install at a suitable time.

Thank you so much for your help! I just added it, so we'll see if it works. Thanks again!
