Hi Everyone

I have a client that is running a small network (3 machines) and their opperating system is XPHome, all seems to be working ok, however they asked me a question that i could not answer and it is really bugging me.

This is what is happening. They are using Office 2000 apps (word and excel) when they save a file it seems to create a duplicate of that file but with the IE icon, if you open the file it opens the application that the original was greated in (word or excel). These files only show up if they do a search for all files, and the system says that they are located in My Computer, i have tried this on my own PC (XPPro) and none of these file type exist for any of my documents.

Any ideas ?

this is probably the residual files that Office automatically saves while you are working on documents.

Surely if they were residual files then they would be deleted at some time. These are not being deleted.

What's the file extension? XP creates .db files if you have Thumnail view enabled. Andrew Baines

A bit off subject, but I find it interesting you said these people are using the HOME version of XP - as far as I know and from what I've read the HOME version cannot be networked.. "The beauty of the second amendment is, that it will not be needed until they try to take it." - Thomas Jefferson

reepa,

If the extensions are .lnk, they are shortcuts that are created and placed in the recent documents folder. These are what show up when you go into Start > Recent Documents or Recent Programs. They point to the document and would open that document when you click on them.

Monguse,

XP Home can be networked quite well and works effectively for small to mid-sized comapnies. It just is not supported in a "domained" environment. You need XP Pro to participate in a domain.

Hope that helps.
