Ok here is is.

I have one machine with XP Home and on machine with W2K Pro.

I am trying to network them together simply by connecting a CAT5 cable from one machines NIC to the others.

The XP home machine will be my main machine connected to the internet via a USB Cable modem
I set up the network wizard on XP
Created a workgroup
Disabled firewalls
Enabled ICS and File and Print Sharing
Set the TCP/IP setting to obtain IP address and DNS details automatically for APIPA (As per microsofts MVP KnowledgeBase site)

On the W2K machine
Joined the workgroup ok
Disabled Firewalls
Enabled ICS and File and Print Sharing
Set the TCP/IP setting to obtain IP address and DNS details automatically for APIPA (As per microsofts MVP KnowledgeBase site)

Have rebooted machines numerous times but neither can see the other.
Cannot ping by IP address (169.254.....different from here on on both machines) or host name (obviously)

Please Please Please HELP!!! This is now driving me nuts. I even tried giving static IP configs but still could not get them seeing each other

HELP PLEASE. How do i get my machines talking to/seeing each other, being able to map drives and all that??

Thanks in advance for your help

So i enable ICS on the XP machine (as this is the one hosting my internet connection) and set both the W2K and XP machines to obtain IP automatically??? or just the 2K machine and set static IP for the XP machine?

Also the website you mentioned
does not say anything about W2K??

Thanks for your help.

i'm getting there.

The client W2K machine with 192.168.... address can see the Server XP machine 192.168.0.1 but the Server (XP machine cannot see the client (W2K)

??? Almost there
any ideas?

thanks again

Sounds like a firewall is active on the client machines. Check the client machines and disable the ICF native firewall.

The client machine is W2K pro using Norton Firewall. However this is disabled.

ping requests from server to client timeout on IP address and host unknown for PINGing hostname.

Thanks

Clicking the tray icon and disabling the firewall is not enough.

Include as a Trusted Zone all the network traffic on 192.168.0.0 -- 192.168.0.255. Be sure to allow ICMP requests.
