I would appreciate any tips. I find myself in a bad situation where I need to connect to the Internet to do medical searches for my family and I can't, so I'm pretty desperate...

I was reading some past post by azz777 about the same topic (attached below) but like him I was unable to get something but:
"an operation attempted on something that is not a socket"

Everything was working fine (two laptops connected to a router, router to the modem, to the ISP through a cable modem) till I tried to do a file sharing operation and that broke my socket. Who knows why!!!

- I get the Microsoft default address (169.254...)
- I have tested the network adapter through the BIOS and it is fine. So much so that if I manually enter an IP address, I can ping and tracert machines in the outside world (it doesn't resolve names, even manually giving a DNS server though).
- I have done the repair option from the CD of the operating system.
- I have tried reseting TCP/IP with the "netsh int ip <log>" command.

Nothing has worked so far. azz777 hasn't logged onto here since his posting. I wonder if he was able to solve it.

Thank you!

doesn't work in my case. XP works well for two month. then just got 169.254.. IP. when trying to ipconfig/renew got this
"an operation was attempted on something that is not a socket"
when set in static IP, can only ping by router, can't ping other pc on the LAN, can NOT browse by IP address.

have done this, but still not working:
* reset TCP/IP as said in * remove and reinstall NIC
* reinstall Mcafee Virusscan/firewall, ..., later remove it again using Mcafee's uninstaller as MS said
* try with new NIC, new cable (work on other PC)
* try static IP
* try reinstall XP Sp1
* try reinstall XP then SP1

I am almost going to format the HD, anyone got any ideas?

The DHCP should be provided by the router. The 169.254.x.x address is provided when your system does not get an IP address either manually or through DHCP. First thing to do is go into the router's setup screen and make sure DHCP is enabled.

The fact is that the router is OK. That is, that router is passing traffic from and to my other laptop o2 attached to it. In fact, I'm able to manually enter an IP address for the broken laptop o1 and send pings to the router and to the world. No names though (ping doesn't work, even with a DNS server IP address given), since the socket is broken.

Have you tried to edit your mac address in your router !
was the computer on and up before you changed the nic !
and it sounds like you have a DNS problem Turn everything off and do a hard restart on the router , go to your manufacturers book for dirrections on that !
Might work who knows !
I thought is better than nothing ! Anthony Cabanas
