Ok,
This is a weird one. I suspect it is probably memory related, as my computer tends to run into temporary slow-down, slow loading, and other problems of that sort.
Last night, when I went to bed I left my system running because I had a lot of half finished stuff going on and I wanted to pick up again this morning where I had stopped. When I came back to the computer today the system was "stuck" The screensaver (starfield) was covering the screen and not moving. No mouse movement OR key press would bring the desktop back up. Not even control-alt-del was doing anything. In the end I resorted to the reset button on the case. Well, that's OK in part, my system is back up and running, apparently with no damage, but I have lost the exact combination of files that I was working on yesterday and that is a bit of a pest. At the time I stopped work I had 18 Notepad files open, 2 Explorer folders, plus Firefox (3 tabs) and Easyshare.
Now Firefox, and Easyshare are no trouble because they always re-open where you left them, but how the heck am I supposed to remember which 18 Notepad files I was using? This kind of hang-up occurs on my computer every few weeks or so, it's not really a major problem, except for the fact I would like to be able to return to the same set of files and programs that I had open before the freeze happened. I am trying out some auto-save solutions so that I don't loose any unsaved data in the Notepad files if I forget to save them and it happens again, but I don't find the recent files list in the Start Menu very useful (see attachment).
What I'd really like is a little utility which would keep track of a list of the filenames and programs I have open at all times. Whenever I add a file or program to the list it would make a record and then items would drop off once they were closed again. It would be sort of like a retrospective Task Manager window that you could access after a crash to get things going again. The "Recent Files" list is annoying because it lists a bunch of stuff I have closed (like the jpg images and doesn't list ALL the Notepad files I WAS using, presumably because there were too many of them, and Microsoft, in it's "wisdom" thinks the jpg's are more important.
I am running Windows XP version 5.1.2600 (Home Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 3) on an Intel Pentium 4 2.80 GHz CPU with 512 MB of Ram and an 80G hard drive which currently has 32.7G of free space. I know this is woefully underpowered by most people's standards, but, as I say, it works for me, except for this one thing.
