Having this problem a lot recently.
Running AMD XP2000, 1 Gig DDR 2100, Shuttle AK39N board, ATI 8500, Live 5.1, Intel Pro 100 NIC.
One HDD, primary master, CD burner and DVD are secondary master and slave.

WHen this happens (welcome lock up), it can take upto 10 goes to try and get past it.
IT has frozen up in other areas as well, doesn't matter what I am doing. Have system works 2003 on it. Ran speed disk, disc doctor virus scan etc. All OK.
All drivers are up to date.
It's a new board, the only thing I can think of is that the HDD is suspect.
Is there any programs out there that run diagnostics on the drive ??

Steve

What's the FSB on the AMD XP2000?
It appers to be a limit on your motherboard to 266Mhz FSB.

You didn't mention who the HD manufacturer was but I know both Western Digital and Maxtor have programs you can download that run diagnostics on their drives.
I would start with the manufacturers web page under support to see if they have a diagnostic program for your particular brand.
