All there everyone.

I am trying to Connect to an existing Wireless Router that connects to cable broadband modem. I have been assigned a MAC address and have the network key and all that stuff saved on laptop.

For some reason I can Ping and Surf websites using IP addresses, but not host names. My router is pointing at two DNS servers supplied by my ISP. Using IPConfig I can see that everything is handled by my router - Gateway, DHCP, DNS. My flatmate can connect to the Internet using the same address, suggesting to me that this is a local issue. DHCP seems to be working as I have an IP address and can ping etc. All the wireless related accessories I have find no problem with connectivity, again suggesting that this is a DNS issue.

Unfortunately I do not have a full spec for you at the moment.

The strangest thing is, last night in a fit of despair, I installed the automatic updates in the bottom right of the tray. I do not know if they are old, or were downloaded since I have been having these problems. After this, the DNS started working and I had FULL access to everything. I turned the computer off, and this morning it does not work anymore.

Do you think reinstalling IP may fix this? This is a relatively clean laptop. I do not want to reformat...

Any help will be greatly appricated.

Thanks for your time in advance.

Jamie

Just curious as to what ipconfig /all on your laptop shows. If it's in the 169.254.x.x range, then you're not getting an address from dhcp, that's an automatic ip when things aren't working correctly. You say you're using dns servers your provider gave you, where do you have them listed?

The DNS is listed on the Router

IP Config shows an 192.X.X.X Number.

First check for a lmhosts file in the Windows/System32/drivers directory (Not lmhosts.sam) if there is one rename this lmhosts.sav or such. Reboot the machine. Then clear the DNS cache using ipconfig /flushdns.

If this restores internet access but only until a reboot its time to run hijackthis...

try to check the dns server listed are correct. Do a nslookup snd see which server it is trying to query?

I will try all of these when I get home today. 2 Questions/points:

1. "I'd go ahead and do a re-install." Re-install windows? Or can just reinstall IP/TCP? If so, how do I do this?

2. Not sure if this helps, but there is another computer using the router which is working fine. This suggests that there is nothing wrong with the DNS servers listed on the router.

Thanks

Jamie

try to disable windows firewall time being. If that doesn't work try "windows system restore" to a older date when it worked.

If that doesn't help just remove and re-install tcp/ip.Reboot and reconfigure. Use yout roommate's connection and try to connect. If that works It should work in your place.
