I need to clean off some space on my drive. I was playing with the disk cleanup tool. I noticed a check box for Compress old files....What exactly will it remove...How does it know what to delete.
Compress Old Files" doesn't delete anything it just compresses old hardly used files to save you some space.
Have a look at the "Options" tab below the main selections box in Disk Cleanup when you have HIGHLIGHTED the "Compress old files". Read the information above the "Options" tab too.

Keep in mind when you compress files it has to decompress them before you can use them which makes it a little slower. If you have plenty of room I wouldnt use it.
