I have been getting this problem over the past few weeks now. I have a digital Camera (SONY DSC-P71), which most of the time on connection to my Computer will Crash the Windows XP session. Occasionally it will do what it is supposed to do and run the Camera and Scanner wizard.

I also have the same problem when hooking a compactflash USB card into the computer.

Windows XP is upgraded to SP1.

Am using Windows Detected drivers for Compactflash and Sony-Memorystick..

Any help would be appreciated, sort of reinstalling XP, which is my next option.

Thank You.

Go to the manufacturers site first to get their drivers for XP.
See what happens.

This sounds exactly like something that I fought with for quite a while. First, try marcs41's suggestion. If that doesn't help, try going into Device Manager, right-click on any device and select 'Scan for Hardware changes'. What happens? Your answer will verify if this is the same conditions I had, before I go into details about the problem.

Thanks, will try tonight and let you two know.

Ok, have been to the sony website adn unfortunately didnt have much in the way of updates... BUT

Their knowledge base mentioned a simlar issue with a Sony Movie Camera.. and they say that there is an incompatability with the USB 2.0 driver used by WinXP..

Will try this otherwise will configure using their instructions to change camera mode to PTP instead of USB, then modify settings on computer for that.

Will let you know.

Does this link not give you that USB fix?

Hmm update in, seems ok so far. Has only crashed once when I turned camera on then off then back on.. usual crash message then.

Apart from that seems so far so good.

Tried smahs suggestion in Device Manager and nothing happened.

Regards all

Then it's not the same conditions - mine would BSOD just after scanning for new devices.

I have resolved the problem with a workaround I found. I change the mode on the camera to work in PTP mode instead of USB mode. Now seems much more stable.

Many thanks for those offering help.

Guy
