This looks pretty nasty so any help would be much appreciated. PC was continually rebooting for no apparent reason. After each reboot it went through the chkdsk process, but now it won't restart at all. It's coming up saying missing operating system. Tried booting into dos but it won;t even see the c drive. Tried booting from XP cd and it comes up with a message saying 'Line 21065 of the INF file \i386\txtsetup.sif is invalid. Setup cannot continue'.
Help anyone???

Sorry, at this time i can not help... still looking for the
i386\txtsetup.sif file.. I can not find one in my
XP-SP2.RTM have several .ISOs to open an check to see possibly what line 21065 would be...but I'm looking..

Found and check every txtsetup.sif that i have
"more than a couple" every one I checked "line 21065" was blank... also check up 10 lines and down 10 lines all blank.

The way I checked was extracted all "txtsetup.sif" into one dir.. then changed the ext to .mrc opened in mirc text editor.. clicked 'goto line' "21065" to read them..

Sorry. What version of XP were u trying to install..
might help. If I do not have that Version on my system I can access it, from another source(s)...

Cheers Frank. It's XP Pro, SP1. I'm creating ERD boot disks to see if that's any use but I'm not optomistic.

sorry I can not assist. also check some SP1a.. versions.

However that being said, problems during setup are normally down to two things. Corrupt Media, or faulty hardware, as you were experiencing problems before hand, it would not be unreasonable to think hardware is the problem.

As a first stop I would Test your memory using and your harddrive using the free tool available on your HD manufacturers website.

Kept trying and found the line in txtsetup.sif changes every time. Also got a bit further once when it got as far as hanging when it was installing usb keyboard files. Seems to be completely random. I'll keep plugging away anyway

I know this post is now quite old, but,
I'm getting this problem on a new PC build.
ASUS MB
Athlon 2400 CPU
DDR400 512 ram
XP Home,

error says, while installing XP on a newlly formatted hard drive;
"Line 19234 of inf file /i386/txtsetup.sif is invalid setup cannot continue. press any key to exit"

So, I think it's probably my CPU,
I say that because I started with a Chaintech MB and switched to this new ASUS MB (A7V8X-X)thinking that the Chaintech MB was in someway damaged.
anybody any ideas on how I get the CPU checked out?

msbpser = "MICROSOFT BALLPOINT SERIAL MOUSE"
lgser = "LOGITECH SERIAL MOUSE"
USB = "USB PS2 MOUSE"
none = "NO MOUSE" line 19234 on my install CD
msser = "*MICROSOFT SERIAL MOUSE"

would help if you show your line???

Note to GPalmer711 and all,

Counting lines is not going to help. Where it counts (I could not ignore the pun) it is not a strict enumeration of the line count of the .sif file.

The real message is that it used a Ven_ID to a reference that was invalid.

Look to see, if using a newer VIA set of drivers for the motherboard. (Changes Ven_ID and other issues). Look to see if you tried to enter drivers into the Mass Storage area manually; or any other area, manually. It is easy to screw this up if a complementary .INF is not available during install in \i386.

your right on counting... that is why i ask if he could post/show his line in the .sif file.... (sorry) i also ment to say the lines I posted are from my Slipstreamed SP2 Bootable CD.... I'm not sure if I still have a plain jane retail copy of XP. I do have my MSBeta issued copy of SP2..

Okay, it is not a line cound issue. Agreed.

The issue is the device drive from VEN_id is wrong. Wrong in it syntax, and wrong as to what it points to for the plug and play service.

Guys,
I have changed the CPU to a 2600 and the problem has gone away! So it's seems that thhe 2400 was at fault and giving me the line error in txtsetup.sif
After fitting the 2600 CPU, XP installed with no problems at all, so I'm up and running on the new PC ready to finish the software installs.

Thanks for the replies, A mate is going to test the 2400 CPU on his PC.
