XP continually reboots

This happened before so i reinstalled after a month its doing it again..

I ran a free quick test of hardware all seemds ok...

syst is a PIII 1GHZ 256 asus MB..

basically system boots.. everything is OK.. then XP pro splash screen then goes black... hear a quick power off then reboots again..

if i run floppy bootable diag or dos/ntfs disk system stays on forever....

???? ????

Could be anything....

-Boot sector or other type of virus or spyware
-Corrupt startup files
-Corrupt registry
-Defective or damaged parts
-Corrupt BIOS
Maybe even the power supply.

Give us some more detail. Can you start in safe mode? Can you start the DOS Command Prompt? What exactly have you tried thus far? What do you mean by "system stays on forever"? No offense, but we aren't beside you there....need some more detail about the problem.

Sounds like you have got a virus. this happend to me and after downloading a stinger program from mcafee website I found virus. the virus was removed and my computer is ok now. I am trying to think of the virus name but it eludes me - I know it was a popular one at the time.

Run a detailed memory check from DOS.

If it isn't a virus, you might want to disable the 'auto-restart' mechanism. There is an option in XP which auto-restarts the machine if something goes wrong with the OS. You can disable this from Control Panel -> System -> Advanced -> Startup and Recovery Settings. Disable Automatic Restart.

If there happens to be an OS failure, the blue screen will give you details as to why it was restarted.

I had the exact same problem with one of our pc's running xp pro. It turned out to be a faulty case power switch. We replaced the case and that solved problem.

I agree with all of the above. If you suspect hardware, I would do or check the following:

1. Change the power supply. (bad or weak electricity?)
2. Possibly RAM. Swap it if you can.
3. Find the jumper on the motherboard and clear the BIOS settings.

There's not much else hardware wise that would cause the reboot.

It COULD be the power switch, but if the switch was faulty, it wouldn't reboot at the EXACT same time/screen on every reboot. I suspect everything that I listed above....you have to rule out every possibility.

See if you can boot up in Safe Mode and do like cod3x said about the Auto-restart thing then try it.

sounds like a software problem. Does windows start in safe mode?

I had same problem after I had installed Roxio EZ6, I went to safe mode and did system restore to last known good boot and was O.K.
