XP Com port

I've connected a satelite programmer through a serial connection. I'm running XP. The software says that it cannot locate the programmer. How do I check if XP is allowing the com port connection? I hooked the progrsmmer up to a 98 system and it worked fine. Any suggestions?

Try having a look at the 98 machine to see the com port settings, ie com port number , transmission speed (bits per second) parity, stop bita. Do thy differ to the one in XP?
