Hello everybody, you're just about my last hope before i strap on a straight jacket and go and bounce my head against a rubber wall! I have a small network - NT 4 server & 3 XP pro clients. The NT shares are visible and can be accessed from the clients. The problem is, that i can't access shares on other clients. If i ping the IP i get no results, but the clients are visible in explorer!! I have tried different protocols, without luck. I think i am missing something totally easy, but i haven't a clue what :) Any chance you can help?

Hi, sounds to me like the oh-so-clever firewall in XP. If the box is checked, try clearing it to see if the server can see the clients.

Hi skandal, been there, done that :) None of the clients has an active firewall. The server can see all the clients and can use the shares, it's the clients that can't communicate with each other.

This may seem like an obvious question. When you shared the folders, did you give permissions to network users, or local users on the XP clients? (Assuming you have an NT domain set-up that is.) Otherwise you will need to grant access to each user on each XP client.

Hi Tazmaniandevil, i finally managed to solve the problem. It turned out to be a hardware bug. The two onboard network adapters had the same mac address (that is no address at all!!!). All i had to do was install a network adapter card in one of the clients.

Nevertheless many thanks to all who helped :)
