Hello,

I have 5 XP computers networked together through ethernet, one of the computers is connected to the internet through a broadband modem.

I need to allow the other 4 computers access to the broadband connection, if I use the internet connection sharing on XP, the connection is too slow.

I want to introduce another computer with server responsibilities to control this internet connection for all 5 xp computers.

How do you suggest going about it. I have been asked to get a ADSL router to allow more than 1 computer to connect to the internet connection.

Any suggestions will be great.

Thanks

ALo mate..

Yes all you need is a router. Very Simple to set up.. plug the DSL cable into the wan port on the router and the rest into the lan ports on it. The router will give the computers IP addresses and they will be setup to connect to the net straight away.

Good Luck Its easy

Adding a server for internet connection sharing is unlikely to speed-up your connection. A hardware router is a simpler and more reliable first step, and offers NAT firewall protection to your system as well.

In addition, upgrade your service class. You likely need more bandwidth than you are now receiving from your ISP with five active users.

ICS for all of its faults is not particularly slow in providing broadband sharing. If it is slow now, just adding a server is not going to make you happy.

Hi Jonno,

Thanks for the info Ive looked at my supplier they have offered me

Netgear RO318 Broadband Router with built in 8 port 10/100Mbps Switch

This should allow me to do it.

Can I confirm with you that all the computers should be connected directly to the router via ethernet cables and cards etc.

And the DSL modem cable connects to the WAN port of the router.

If the above is correct, then I dont need to introduce a new computer /server like setup.

Thanks
Phil

DSL modem to WAN port.
All computers to the LAN ports.
All computers set to "Obtain an IP address automaticly"
All computers have "enable Netbios over TCP/IP"
All computers have same workgroup name, unique computer name
DHCP server service enabled on router.
