I recently put in a new hard drive, updated to Win XP Pro, put in a wired network card, set everything up on my wired network. Removed card, put in a Linksys WMP11 network card, bought a new Linksys WAP11 but I cannot connect or ping this access point or get on the internet or see my other computers.
Setup - 1 wired computer through cable modem, through router, then access point.
I think my problem is I cannot remove the old NIC from my win xp computer. It doesn't show up unless I am running in safe mode and when I try to remove, it says something like "cannot remove this item it may be needed on startup", so I try to disable, still no luck.
How do you remove an old NIC from the hardware menu?
Thanks for your replies.

If it's not in the computer and not showing up in regular mode XP is not using it.

Thanks for the reply...so why won't it let me delete it in safe mode?

Check your services. If you have QoS service enabled stop it or disable it. Then go to device manager and click on view, then select show hidden devices. Select your NIC and see if you can uninstall it.

"The reason that uninstalling the device fails is that the device is marked in the registry as not being user removable.
You can find the relevent registry key by searching the registry for the string "Packet Scheduler Miniport". The key should be under HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet. The "not user removable" attribute is stored in the Characteristics bitfield of the device's registry key.
The "not user removable" bit is 0x20 and clearing that bit allows the device to be removed through Device Manager. In my case, the Characteristics value was 0x00000029 and I changed it to 0x00000009"

I will try this to remove old nic, do you think it is interferring with me not being able to connect to the internet or other computer? Or using resources needed by my new wireless nic?
