After doing a De-Frag, I go to My Compter and it shows as "local disk" and asks me to format it. This has happened twice in the last three months. First with Windows de-frag, and just today with "perfect disk". My drive is a Maxtor 250 and I use it for video editing. I had tons of work on there. Is it lost?

1. Run the Maxtor diagnostic (powermax - available from their website) to see if there's a problem with the drive. It also can fix some issues.

2. You say this has happened twice in last 3 months (is this the second - or is it twice before this one?) How did you recover from that? You may need some data recovery software (eg, getdataback).

3. Assuming you're running XP, drive should be formatted as ntfs. Ntfs doesn't really need defragging - and defragging often causes problems. Running chkdsk occasionally is a better idea.

Hi Wolluf, and thanks for the reply...

1. Did run the Maxpro software full diag and the drive showed to be fine.

2. This was the second time. Was told that perfect disk was much better, so I gambled. The first time I just cut my losses and formated it. This time I would lose 100 hrs of work. Maxtor phone support recommended I download "R-Studio.com"'s free trial. I did and it is scanning as I type, but looks very complicated for a Dummy like me. I'll let you know how that goes.

3. Boy, am I happy to hear you say that, because I never plan on doing it again until I dump a HD. Just seems like too many chances to take moving so many things around.
