win98 can not see XP pro in LAN
I can ping it however.
Win xp pro can see Win98.
Tell me the secret to make this thing
work

Have you created a user on XP or allow guests?

I created a user but I am not sure if there is
more than one way to create users.
It did not work anyhow

Is simplified sharing enabled on XP? (don't need accounts if it is - Folder Options, View tab). Have you actually shared any resources (drive, folder, printer) on XP (not the default, eg C$ shreas - ones you've set up). 98 machine won't be able to access XP unless this is done.

The user on XP must have the same account name and pass as the user on 98. Try turning off the firewall in XP as well.
Have you got file and printer sharing installed?
Have you actually shared a folder on the XP machine? Cheers,
Jim

'The user on XP must have the same account name and pass as the user on 98' - is NOT true if simplified sharing is turned on in XP (that's what simplified sharing is for - to avoid having to do that).

there is a user account in the WinXP and the Win98 that is exactly the same.
There are files shared in both units.
File and printer sharing is enabled in both units.
I tried a new install of win98 and it worked.
I wish I knew what in the old install was stopping the whole thing
from working.
I now have to re-install all the programs on the new HD or wipe out
the existing one and start all over.
I tried over writing some of the files in the old system to see if any of them
might have been corrupt. No dice !
I tried removing all the protocols and the adapter and re installing them.
It did not work either.
I give up

Bajan,

Sorry to hear you had to reinstall - I'd have thought removing & reinstalling network stuff would have worked if problem with networking (done that many times with win98), but problem must have been 'deeper' than that. You never know with 98 (which is why I never use it seriously any more - just for the odd game that won't run on NT based systems - NT/2K/XP only on the windows front now).
