Hi! I am a complete newbie, so if this is the wrong forum for the completely ignorant, please let me know.

I have 4 machines in a workgroup called check (3 running XP and one running Redhat 8.0. From the Linux machine, I can browse and access files on all but one of the XP machines. From the XP machine I can't access (but I can see) from Linux, I can access and browse the shares on the Linux machine. That's bad enough, but I can't access the Linux machine from any of the machines that I can access from the Linux machine. I get a message saying I don't have permission.

In short, I can't seem to go share both ways here. I have included the smb.conf file in the hope that someone can help. TIA.

couple of suggestions..
try security=user
for each share use the browseable = yes .

On the red hat what do you get when you do a
# smbclient -U% -L localhost

on the XP machine what do you get when you do a
# net view.
are u able to see the servers

MP

Hi! Thanks for the quick response. When I do net view I get the following:

C:\>net view
Server Name Remark

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
\\GREGXP
\\LOCALHOST Samba Server
\\SAMXP
\\SUETHOYRE SUE THOYRE
\\SUEXP
The command completed successfully.

And when I do the other, I get:

[root@localhost root]# smbclient -U% -L localhost
added interface ip=192.168.1.105 bcast=192.168.1.255 nmask=255.255.255.0
Domain=[CHECK] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samba 2.2.5]

I don't get it. It looks like everything's there. Anyway, I'll try the changes you suggested. Thanks again!

Murugs, thx for the help. I did what you said, and it's working on two machines. The troublesome machine is the one the SAMBA server could see but not browse (or see) the shares.

More info: I have a 2000/xp dual boot machine in my home network. All of the rest of the machines can interact with the Linux SAMBA server. The Linux box can see the 2k/xp machine but cannot see the shares. The 2k/xp machine can see and browse the files on the Linux (SAMBA) box from both platforms. The user names and passwords are the same on both OSes in the 2k/xp machine.

Any clues on this one?

Hello
Glad it worked..
Regarding the samba server which is giving problems..pls let me know what is the error it is giving you when u browse the shares..which will help to understand the problem more.

regards
MP

It gives no error. It just shows a blank screen. It can see the host but not the folders being shared.

Thx for all the help. I followed everyone's advice and all is well. When I saw I couldn't connect, I looked at what it was doing and realized that I also had two virtual OS network connections that were unresolvable since one was on a different subnet. I disabled them, and everything worked!!!
