Ok I've looked this up on google groups and there are hundreds of posts re XP not working properly with external modems , but no-one seems to have a fix
I have to keep uninstalling and reinstalling the modem and restarting the machine to get it to dial up succesfully . XP recognises the modem and loads the generic drivers for it , So far so good .
I can dial up and connect no problem but when I disconnect and then try and dial up again the problem starts . Modem dials correctly , shakes hands with my ISP and then disconnects . I then repeat the process of uninstalling and installing the modem in device manager and it works again ! .
I know this seems to be a common problem in XP but does anyone have any suggestions on how to get around it ?

Running XP Pro
Modem - ADDTel 56K

I have succeeded in Windows XP with the installation of a
"Hayes 336 FAX Modem"

by using the standard Windows XP driver for a
"Standard 33600 Modem".

The "Hayes" driver from Microsoft's XP database does NOT work with this Hayes modem, ( ha ! )

BUT, the STANDARD MODEM DRIVER for XP works just fine ! !

If you are having troubles with your modem in XP,
then why not try the "STANDARD DRIVER" for your modem type.

When other drivers, even from your own modem's manufacturer, have not worked, why not try the XP standard modem driver. It might just work !

hi , thanks for your response . Will have a go at what you suggest . XP doesn't have the driver for this ADDTel modem I'm using so it automatically loads a generic Rockwell 56K driver , I'm presuming because the ADDTel uses a Rockwell Chipset .
