XP and 98 networking problems

Hi all,

Here is the setup:

The user is behind a cable modem connected to a linksys router. There are two computers connected to the linksys router. One is a laptop running XP-Pro and the other is a desktop running 98SE. Both computers can surf the Internet and can ping the router. The 98 box can ping the XP box, but the XP box can't ping the 98 box. Both machines does not have any type of personal firewall installed and have TCPIP as the only protocal. Both are using client for Microsoft Networking and have the similiar workgroup name.

Ultimately, the user would like to share files and printers between the two computer.

Does anyone know why the networking issues?

static IP addresses or is the router assigning them? Or are they both assigned external addresses?

pinging from XP to 98 are you using the IP address or the machine name? Its odd, as TCP/IP must be working for XP to access internet. What does running IPCONFIG /ALL from a command prompt on XP show you?

Have you tried sharing anything yet - or did the lack of pinging stop this?

The router is assigning the IP via DHCP. I'm pinging from and to both machines via IP address only. I've tried sharing the entire C drive on the 98 machine with no password setup but the XP machine was not able to browse to the machine.

You could try installing netbeui for file sharing (doesn't resolve the TCP/IP problem, but if it works and internet works with IP...)

as netbeui not available by default in XP. Should just be able to add it in network properties in win98.

I'm still going with a firewall of some sort. Don't forget that many virus scanners now include a firewall component.

Try adding the user that logs into the Win98 machine to the XP and give it administrator rights. Both should see each other if everything else is correct.

if this is still not working try using a net use command to map a drive ie net use x: \\ipaddress\sharename so net use x: \\192.1168.100.1\c$ (c$ if the share is a hidden share or just the share name if it isnt hidden)
