Hi, I am having a problem with some W2k and XP stations when starting some programs. Here's the details. I just started working for this Co and they have NT4 Servers and some workstations mainly running AutoCAD R14. when upgrading to AutoCAD 2002, SOME of the workstations 2k and XP give me a "Could not update Registry. Use REGEDIT to update" error message but clicking OK will start the program anyway. The only fix I can find is giving those users Domain Admin privileges but it is not a good idea. This will only happen on some machines. Other users have been upgraded to AC 2002 with no problem even though they belong to the same groups. Any ideas???

Thanks!!
Al

Check the permissions granted the logon account on the workstations. You must be logged on as a *local* administrator. In other words, you must be logged on as an administrator of the computer that you're installing the software on. A Domain Admin will be a local administrator, but it's much better to make the user a member of the local Administrators group.

Right click My Computer, and select Manage from the pop-up menu. Open Local Users and Groups. You should be able to find your way from there.

Our company(s) use AC14 through 2003 and permissions is an issue with AutoCAD. you have to be at least a poweruser to run autocad and even that will cause problems if your end users use additional plugins and add-ins. Users need RWXD permissions to programs files and certain keys in the registy such as HKLM\software. The problems is that a poweruser by default only has read permissions to these directories. It can be a major pain tweeking a client's permissions for autocad to run smoothly without local admin rights. We assign local admin rights for Auto cad users but never domain admin rights -- which has danger written all over it. The Auto Desk web site has some good information on it. Hope that helps.

Thanks a lot for your replies and help. We decided to give everybody local admin rights and that took care of it. They all seem to be working ok now.

Thanks again and happy holidays!

Al
