hi,
i have a 98se machine and an xp-pro machine connected via crossover cable. file sharing is enabled on both. xp can ping 98 and vice versa by name and ip address. 98 can access all files, folders, and drives in the xp machine - no problem. xp's drives are mapped as x and y on 98.
xp can't access any drives on 98. xp provides ics for 98.

98 is not showing up on xp's network hood. no spyware is actively running on 98. no know firewall is running on 98.
any ideas?

Ensure the workgroup name on both the XP machine and 98 machine are the same.

Hmm. My buddy is having the exact problems. He said he shut down the 98 box for a few days, and now it won't connect. I'm wondering if there was a Windows Update that failed?

He backs up to the 98 machine, so he's getting nervous.

Anyone else have the same setup that still works?

this setup used to work. just like your buddy, we disconnected the 98 machine for a while, let it sit for about 3 months. at the mean time we hooked up an xp machine (xp to xp). now that we re-connected the 98 machine back up, it's acting strange. anybody have any suggestions?

Common 'fix' for networking problems involving 98 machine (especially ones like this, where it did work) is to completely remove networking elements from 98, then reboot and let it rediscover & reinstall them.

thanks guys,
i'm gonna give those suggestions a shot this evening.

Make sure the dns suffix is the same. On XP it defaults to mshome.net. I don't know what it is on 98. Once the DNS prefix is correct, you'll be able to do allsorts including sharing internet connections.
