Xerox 8500 smears only when double-sided

Side one will print beautifully. When printing on side 2, bits of side one will overprint side 1 offset down the page. This is on two identical machines. Both have had new maintenance kits installed but without success.
 
Third party ink in it? If so, it sticks to the drum and will do that. Sometimes the paper will stick to the drum on the first pass.
 
The answer was supplied by the ink suppier. The 8500 does not do duplex printing, so when printing the second side, select the '2nd side' paper option and this lofts certain plates inside that prevent ink from the first side from re-depositing further down the page.
