No matter what options I try in Xconfigurator, I end up with my X display about 20 times larger than it should be. It is so large that the bar at the bottom of GNOME takes up the bottom third of the screen.

I am installing Red Hat 6.2 on a gateway computer with a graphics card that cannot be detected. I think the manufacturer of the card is Chrontel??

What setting could I try to alter to fix this problem. I've tried almost all resolution settings.
Doug Tyre

<a href= Information Systems Institute (at UM)
If the X Windows autodetect can't recognize your video card, it uses a default configuration. Since X doesn't recognize your card, you may be able to hand tune the modelines to get a more reasonable display, provided the Chrontel (or whatever) VDG can be handled by the X Windows SVGA driver. If you haven't already, check <A HREF=" TARGET="_new"> (or the sunsite mirror) to see if your video card is supported - which it doesn't appear to be.You will have to have some technical information about your monitor, as well as the video card, in order to tune the modelines. If you want to give this a shot, e-mail me your X config file, or at least the video configuration section of it.
Octalman

Have you tried using the setup command to set up X Configuration? Also, remove any of the low resolution settings from xfree86 configuration. Have you tried the ol' chango-switcho by using ctrl-alt-+/-? That's the hot key to change the resolution to the other preset settings.

Steve Kiehl
Webmaster Nanovox.com

Or just go out and buy a $30 video card which is supported by Xfree. This will make your life a bit less missurable then it will be if you start messing with modes and clocks and fry your video card and monitor.

You could also look into purchasing Metro-X or Accel-X. Both support 100's more cards then Xfree but they are both commercial.

Good luck.

-cm
