I just changed my display resolution and the bit depth in KDE. It told me to restart my X-server. What should i do?

Close all your apps and press ctrl+alt+backspace should kill the X server and restart
 
restart? I dont want to restart my system. I just want to shutdown X server and get the command prompt.

It would restart the X server if your system is setup that way.

Sorry if i was unclear. Ctrl+Alt+Backspace will only restart the x server not the whole machine. The other way is to get to a console screen and key:
init 3
This will kill the x server and leave you with just the text console.
init 5
brings the x server back up
