I'm currently trying to set up X to work on a Compaq Deskpro with Slakware 7. The machine has an S3 Trio64V2 graphics chip in it - trying Xfree 3.3.6. The only X server
I can get to work reliably is vg16. According to the docs it should be xs3 or xsvga. All that happens when X is started is a big hang which seems to lock up the machine totally. Anyone know of any particular problems with these machines or any reason why this might be happening ?

When you say X hangs, do you mean that you get nothing but the cursor and a grey screen? Or you get a desktop and everything freezes at that point? Well you should be able to kill an X session by using ctrl+alt+backspace. If this doesn't work you are kind of stuck hitting the reset switch.
you could try modifying your /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/XF86Config file by changing/adding the option no accel (I believe that is the proper term as I don't have access to my linux box to verify this)

Good Luck
Troy Williams B.Eng.
fenris@hotmail.com

What happens when I do startx is there is a lot of text output - X working out available screen res/monitor combinations etc, the screen goes black ( switching to graphics mode ? ) and thats it, no disk activity - no Ctrl-Alt-Backspace, no Ctrl-Alt-Delete nothing. I'll have a poke around the config files when I get a chance.

Sounds to me like the X server that you are using doesn't like the chipset. You may want to check out <A HREF=" TARGET="_new"> and see what they have to say about your chipset...
Troy Williams B.Eng.
fenris@hotmail.com

I had the same problem with the same video card, but in a different machine. A search on dejaturned up a configuration file someone else had already written for the card. If you can't findit, I still have it in an e-mail message that I canforward to you.
Jim
nx56@inetarena.com

oracle, vb, some javascript

Did you try adding the "option noaccel" ?
Troy Williams B.Eng.
fenris@hotmail.com
