Please help. My world Wide Publishing Service and the related services keep stopping on my web server. There is nothing in the event logs noting this or indicating that something else has happened that would stop them. We have made no modifications to the box that could contribute to this. The machine is running windows NT 4.0 with the latest service packs and IIS 4.0.

Has this happened to anyone else? We are truely stumped.

Thanks!

Have you installed all of the latest hotfixes relating to IIS security? I contracted the Code Red virus on a server that was running IIS, but not my website. The only evidence of the problem was that the event log was showing IIS and service were stopping and restarting. See the following link if you think it could relate:

The digitial signature of the Code Red worm is "default.ida" followd by a long string of N's. Check your log files, especially Thursdays. If it shows up in your logs then you've been hit. The good news is that it hasn't been doing serious damage, although Microsoft is advising admins to rebuild their web servers. McAfee won't have a definition file until 7/25 either. Hope this helps.
