Hi,

Got a couple of problems with Windows Updates the client machine seems to download the updates but fails to install them and by mistake I deleted the machine from WSUS console and do not know how to get it back.

I have tried removing it and re-adding it to the domain but still no luck.

In the WindowsUpdate.log, after the failed installs it states:

# WARNING: Install call failed, reboot required = No, error = 0x80070057

EDIT: Managed to get it back on the WSUS console by using this command:

wuauclt /resetautorization /detectnow

List of Windows Update error codes

I wonder what all this means, does it make any sense to you?

0x80070057 ERROR INVALID PARAMENTER - E INVALIDARG

"One or more arguments are not valid error - Invalid proxy server name was specified in the user's IE settings and hence WinhttpSetProxySettings call fails with E INVALIDARG error. BITS puts the job in TRANSIENT ERROR with the same error code. For ex, if the proxy server is set to this error will be seen. This error is also seen when credentials are supplied such that scheme is not NTLM/Negotiate, but username/password is NULL, since that is not valid (WinhttpSetCredentials fails with E INVALIDARG. BITS 1.5 puts the job into ERROR state with BG E INVALID RESPONSE in the above 2 cases, because of error code mapping E INVALIDARG is always mapped to (BG E INVALID SERVER RESPONSE)"

How to troubleshoot common Windows Update, Microsoft Update, and Windows Server Update Services installation issues

Thanks for the info linney, after stopping the services and registering the dll's and renaming the SD directory, when I start everything back up I see these errors in the log:

WARNING: Failed to read the service id for re-registration 0x80070002
WARNING: Missing service entry in the backup data store; cleaning up

Have you done the rounds at Google to see if there are any clues there?

Have you tried the Server Forums?

I keep thinking about this thread which has fixed so many Windows Update problems and wonder whether there is anything in there to help you even though it is not really talking about WSUS?

Windows Updates Fails After Upgrading to WindowsXP

Thanks for the info once again I finally gave up and did a clean install of the machine again and it downloaded and installed 100 updates but stopped again so I went through the above info again and it started working again. So it is OK so far.
