It's my understanding that you can only select the 'replica' option through the install of WSUS, therefore I would think that you'd have to uninstall and re-install.
ok WSUS was installed on a new windows 2003 server
on the options page the server selected to update from was an internal (parent) server
once it updated there is no option to change it back to get it from the microsoft servers. And i was reading that means this has turned into a replica server
The reason i want to know is there are 40GB of updates needed and it would be easier geting it from a local server then change it to the microsoft server
There is a difference between a replica only server and a server that has a parent server. If you took the option to configure as a replica server during the install then it picks all configuration and updates from it's master (parent) server. If you don't select the 'replica' option then the server can have another server as it's parent and it pulls down the updates (but not any configuration or approvals) from the parent server (MS's or your own). This can easily be changed, but not if the server was installed as a replica server.
create a wsus server
copy the WsusContent from the working server to the new server
find wsusutil.exe once WSUS it is installed
run "wsusutil.exe export export.cab export.log" on the working server
copy the export.cab to the new server
run "wsusutil.exe import export.cab import.log" on the new server
