WSUS "Update Services" service stops

I've installed WSUS on a few site 2003 servers now, and most seem to have gone ok other than isues of whether it's on port 80 or 8530.
However at 1 site everytime I return I find the WSUS console saying a service has stopped and it's not working. The cure is to rightclick "update services" from the list of services and say restart. Not start, because it has started, is running ok, and set to restart infinately when breaking. So if it's running, and restarting it fixes the problem - I'm lost as to why the problem keeps happening when I've left the machine alone - normally for a week at a time but I'm sure at one point it went back to the error message about a failed service on the homepage during the same afternoon I restarted the service to fix it.
Any clues? I've not come across anything yet

Ok it only took 10 minutes or so before it failed again and here is the message from the "to do" list on the WSUS admin homepage that replaces things like "5 products have been added in the last 30 days" etc. If I restart "update services" service, this will go away and the usual things show.

"Check your server configuration
One or more Update Service components could not be contacted. Check your server status and ensure that the Windows Server Update Service is running. Non-running services: SelfUpdate"

I've arrived again to find the WSUS control panel giving the

"Check your server configuration
One or more Update Service components could not be contacted. Check your server status and ensure that the Windows Server Update Service is running. Non-running services: SelfUpdate"

error message, I restarted the "Update Services" service (though as usual it was running ok at the time, allegedly) and the control panel became functional again. I'm really out of ideas on this one. There doesn't seem to be a problem - yet - there is a problem!

this error could be because of alot of things. My AD gurus recently made a chage to our GPO under user rights assisments that hosed my WSUS server and I recieved the same message. All of my research to fix this issue came from MS$ website as well as my second favor forum which is a site dedicated to wsus. hope to see you there. BTW, my issue was the Guest group needs log in locally rights to the server. The Guest user can and should be disabled, but the group still needs the right.

I've set the follow in the domain controllers gpo :

windows/security/local policies/user rights assignment/allow log on locally - added "guests" the guest user account.

Ran gpupdate on the sevrer. Reran wsus but got the same error message. Am I missing something? Of course my problem could always be a different one but ... for now I'll restart the service again just so I can use the console

It seems that didn't work. I've now removed that. Having read

I've now removed iusr_servername from the guests account and set the domain controllers gpo to have the following enabled

windows/security/local policies/security options/network access : let everyone permissions apply to anonymous users

I don't hold much hope that this will work either but time will tell I guess. This problem seems to be a big catchall with lots of people getting it for different reasons and no clear troubleshooting method, aka, the worst type of problems bar intermitant ones :/

Back at this server to find as usual I have to restart the service in order to not get the error message oin the WSUS admin homepage.

Any other ideas anyone? It's strange because this is the only site I visit who's server has done this

Another week, another chance to try to find out why this 2003sp1 server needs the "Update Services" service restarted before the WSUS admin homepage works correctly with no errors. I've not found anything to try that has worked so far :( No news anyone?
