Anyone know if there's a way to stop WSUS from downloading the old updates like prior to SP1 for Windows 2003 and prior to windows xp sp2? They take up a ton of space and everything installed anymore installs with service packs so those old updates do nothing but take up space.

I'd delete them, but I'm sure the next time WSUS goes to sync, it'll just redownload them... ??

Can you set it to only download approved updates and then decline the ones that you don't want this way they won't be pulled down.

I can do that for the client machines that get the updates from the WSUS server, but I can't specify only approved updates should be downloaded on the WSUS.

I just don't see anykind of option even close to this in the sync options. Must not be possible.. oh well.

I think it is but i'm not at a server to check right now, i'll post back when i've had chance to check.

The only way is to check the 'Download update files to this server only when updates are approved' box this way if you decline the files that you don't want they aren't downloaded.

yeah, I already go that option checked. Oh well, guess it's not a huge issue, just bugs me to have so much space taken up by things we'll never need.

thanks though!

Snootalope, if you have declined the old updates that have been superseded you can delete them.

You need to get a tool called wsusdebugtool and run it with the PurgeUnneededFiles switch.

I use this regularly on my WSUS servers and my current content size is about 4Gb excluding OS service packs.

sweet.. that'll work!

Wait though, those old updates that I suppress and delete won't be downloaded again at the next sync will they?

Since you have the 'Download only when approved' option checked as long as you have declined them they will not be re-downloaded.
And if you hadn't declined them they couldn't be deleted from the disk anyway. :)

Oh, you have set it to download only the languages your business uses? Default is all languages.
