WSS 3.0 Document Library - files with "_" not indexing

I have a new install of WSS3.0 on W2003 Server R2.

I am automating the addition of archived PDF files to a document library, however the files have underscores in them "_".
When I try an do a search, nothing appears (left it over an hour).

I have renamed the files, changing the underscores for dashes "_" to "-", and now they appear to index, and appear in the searches. Nothing has been added to the Title, only the file name is available.

Is there an option to allow these underscores? I know they are wildcards in some systems, but I have over 15000 files to import, most of which are "CUST_REF_DATE_TIME.PDF" format.

UPDATE...

I have uploaded 2 files to my Document Library

index_this.txt
index-this.txt

After waiting a few minutes, and then doing a search for "index", only 1 result is show "index-this.txt".

Hope this helps anyone who may know what the problem is.
