Is there anyway to set up the router so that it would work for war driving. I need to use it in a similar situation where we have a couple of houses that have dsl connections in a housing development with antennas on the roof for sharing . At different times different ones are taken down and I want the router to switch over. I flashed it with the sveasoft firmware but I can't seem to get it configured

It still doesn't work. Do I have to change any other settings? Turn off dhcp? Does the client mode have to be routed or bridged? I want it to work exactly like a wireless card.

I am so sorry not to respond back earlier. This Holiday season has been hell on my schedule.

Please explain in a little more detail what does not work. You cannot "War Drive" a router. To properly do this requires access through your computer and a wireless adapter.

The freeware BOINGO client should have identified any wireless routers/APs within range, assuming that the client setup for the WRT54G was done correctly.

A few more details would help.
Bill

I would like to be able to use my router as a wireless adapter. I don't have access to the internet connected computers within the housing development to flash them or change the settings. In client mode under status under wireless if I click on site survey it seems to find the the the wireless networks within range but I am unable to connect to them. The boingo software tells me to connect a wireless access card even though the router is connected in client mode. Thanks Happy Holidays

If the remote wireless routers or Access Points require a WEP key or WPA authentication, or any form of 802.1x authentication, you will be able to see them but not connect. In addition, many routers and APs have MAC authentication as well.

If you should have access to any of these protected devices and are unable to do so, adjust your WEP, WPA and/or 802.11x authentication to match. The problem at this point is solely on your side of the equation.

I'm able to connect to these networks with a usb adapter. There is no security or mac authorization needed. Are there any other settings that need to changed besides selecting client mode?

The SSID and any security settings such as WEP would have to match the corresponding router or access point.

It does match. I still can't connect. the ssid is the same.

I read your link and found nothing that was not pilot error or user misunderstanding of a wireless router device. Is it that hard to understand that the device can support up to three MAC addresses, and if properly working needs to present in a public sense at least two?

In any case there was a very good suggestion late in the thread to go to the Sveasoft Forum and ask your question there. Myself and other fans of the WRT54G router family have likely been there and done that, and are more than willing to help.

Your particular needs are very focused, and a Forum such as the one supported by Sveasoft is better able to handle a narrow interest such as this:
I am sure you will find a resolution there, or at least eliminate the ambiguity shown by others in your link above.

Best,
Bill Castner

They were of no help. BBelow is the interchange I had with them.
I'm trying to setup my wrt54g as a client. I read alot of the posts and no go. I'm running alchemy. I don't have access to the main router but it isn't linksys it is a netgear. After following the instructions here I did a survey and it found the netgear router but I'm unable to connect. I also seems to find itself.

I followed the details given in the post above and it still doesn't work. Are there any settings needed to be set on the computer. I tried boingo to see if it can do a survey and all it says is connect the access card

You'll have to be more specific about your particular settings and what's going wrong.

I would like to use the linksys router in place of an access card to log onto my netgear router and use the internet. I set the wrt54g as client, set the settings to 192.168.2.1 and whatever other settings you instructed. If I do a survey under status the router finds my netgear network (It also seems to find itself) but if I open internet explorer and try to get on to the internet I am unable too. If I do a site survey from boingo it tells me to please connect an access card. Windows wireless zero config says the same. If I use a linksys usb adapter I can just plug it in, open IE and I'm on.

What is the connection type for your wireless device (this is found at the top of the main setup page)? Is DHCP active on the router (main page about 2/3 of the way down)?

Setup -> Basic Setup
...Internet Setup (Wireless)
........Internet Connection Type: default (Automatic DHCP)
...Optional Settings
........Router Name - wbridge1
........Host Name - wbridge1
...Network Setup
........Router IP:
........ Local - 192.168.2.1 (makes it different subnet)
........ Gateway - 192.168.2.1
........ DNS - 192.168.2.1
........ Mask - default (255.255.255.0)
...Network Address
........Server Settings (DHCP):
........ DHCP Server - default (Enable)
Setup -> Advanced Routing
...Advanced Routing
........Operating Mode: GATEWAY (Keep NAT on!)
........ No Static Routing sets defined.
Wireless -> Basic Settings
...Wireless Network
........Wireless Mode: Client
........Wireless Network Name (SSID): YourSSID
Security -> Firewall
...Firewall
........Firewall Protection: Disable
...Block WAN Requests
........Block Anonymous Internet Requests: Unchecked
These are my settings. The client does pick up the IP from the AP on the client router status page.( I'm not sure what you mean keep nat on it doesn't seem to have that selection under gateway)

What are the contents of your Routing Table under 'Advanced Routing.'? Can you telnet into the WRT and ping both of the subnets. (eg, your netgear router and your laptop?)

Caveat: This may be a case of the blind leading the blind.

Try setting both of these to 0.0.0.0. Also, double-check that the SSIDs are set to the same and that you are not running encryption (get it working without and then add it).

I set the gateway and dns to 0. My routing table is set to 0 and the interface to lan and wireless. The routing table says
destination Ip 192.168.1.0
subnet 255.255.255.0
gateway is zero
How would I telnet the netgear router and the laptop
