Wrong e-mail domain in outgoing mails

I have a single exchange 2000 server which caters for three e-mail domains x.com (primary),y.com and z.com representing different companies. Until yesterday all outgoing mails had the appropriate domains attached to them. But since today a strange thing is happening. All outgoing mails have the primary domain x.com alone attached to them. But when an external user replies to a mail from a user in y.com as <username@x.com> (because this is what the external user gets in his inbox), it correctly comes to the inbox of the user in y.com. I don't recollect doing any major change in the exchange server configurations.

This is a very serious problem as it causes confusion to an external user as to which company the sender belongs.

Any guidance or help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Don't know if this helps. But each user in the active directory and users will have by default an adress for each .com in the exchange. Check a user that is in y.com and see what the primary address is. It will be bold from the other two.

Thanks for your reply. I have checked in the Active Directory of all domains. Every user has only the domain that is appropriate to him (i.e) An user in y.com domain has his e-mail set correctly as <username@y.com>. But still all outgoing mails go with x.com (my primary domain).

Kindly help.

Try this - In Active Directory Users & Computers, make sure that each mail-enabled user has the proper address listed under "Email Address" in the user's Properties. Otherwise, Exchange likes to tag the return address as user@yourADdomain.

Hope this helps
