There is an appearance that the deteriation in writing skills has pretty much paralled the changes in teaching methods that have been implemented in recent years. In particular, the reduced reduced requirements for spelling in the lower grades.

There is also the increased use of spelling checkers which allows those with poor skills to avoid the repetitive practice that improves those skills.

They had a report on one of the news programs about this just this past (or should that be passed) week. In typical reporting fashion they made like it was something new that had just been uncovered. I was tempted to try to find an email address for the reported and send them the link to this forum.
