WP10 v. ordinal numbers

Just starting using WP10 and XP the other day and am dumbfounded by the change from my comfortable and efficient WP5.1/W98 used to do my work for years. Ordinal numbers are now required in our text. Even though I have unchecked the box in Format As You Go, WP will still freeze up each time I try to use them. Thank you for your suggestions.

I'm having this same problem, except that disabling Format-as-you-go does stop the freezing when an ordinal is typed.
