The store computer recently had a virus , so a computer guy came to fix it. He cleaned things up and installed a new virus protection, but now we cannot connect to the POS system. When I go to connect, it gives an error message that says "cannot connect to the database". I also tried disabling the new virus protection and then connecting and that didn't work. Do you think it could be fouling things up? What should I try?
thank you so much...Lori

The last posting under my name wasn't me (it was Rosburg on my computer) To keep things straight Denis - if you are going to post please log in to your ID. thanks - Lori

Oh great, we have Denis, and Denny. This isn't going to be confusing at all.

My bad! I posted from the store PC. I certainly cannot login with someone elses user name and password.

Hi mrdenny - did you think of anyone in Astoria or Longview we should call?
I can't thank you enough for for all your help...Lori

Sorry, doesn't look like I've got any contacts in the area.

Ok - thanks again - I guess will get someone in who knows how to recover data and get things back to working. I really think the files are still there and will be restorable. If for some reason everything gets up and running again and the only problem is the POS, I'll maybe post another thread.
cheers - Lori

The files should be restore-able. It's just that the services won't start.

Dear Mr. Denny,

I have been working on this computer now for a few hours and I have made some progress on it.

First, the registry was corrupted after the previous technician did the virus scan and spyware work on it. Because of that, the MMC was unable to start, run or allow me to do anything in the administrative tools applet.

So, I ran a repair on windows XP and that fixed that. When I went into the services applet, all the MSSQL services were set to "disabled." I enabled them all and now need to reconnect to the database which is stored on the local computer, not the peer-shared computer in the other office.

Another thing is, I have had an opportunity to read through the event log in detail and seems as though the major problem is missing registry keys, specifically relating to user login profiles. On the 12th, when the problem began, there were several copies of this in the event log:

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: Userenv
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1517
Date: 8/12/2009
Time: 9:57:14 AM
User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Computer: POS
Description:
Windows saved user POS\OFFICE registry while an application or service was still using the registry during log off. The memory used by the user's registry has not been freed. The registry will be unloaded when it is no longer in use.

This is often caused by services running as a user account, try configuring the services to run in either the LocalService or NetworkService account.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
Further, today after the OS reinstall, I had the following two errors in the event log:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7001
Date: 8/25/2009
Time: 4:33:52 PM
User: N/A
Computer: POS
Description:
The SQLSERVERAGENT service depends on the MSSQLSERVER service which failed to start because of the following error:
After starting, the service hung in a start-pending state.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7005
Date: 8/25/2009
Time: 4:43:06 PM
User: N/A
Computer: POS
Description:
The LoadUserProfile call failed with the following error:
The system has attempted to load or restore a file into the registry, but the specified file is not in a registry file format.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at

In any event, I checked out to make sure HKLM/system/currentcontrolset/mssql hive is there and it is.

Not sure where to go from here. I'm not familiar with the Retail Management System, however I had in-depth experience with the registry, and advanced windows troubleshooting.

Gtiboy73, welcome to the fun.

What message do you get when trying to start the mssqlserever service from the command line? Has the ERRORLOG file been updated at all? If so please post that as well. I'll see what I can dig up on that error when I get up in a few hours (I'm at Denny's at the moment).

LoadUserProfile sounds more OS that SQL, so there may still be OS issues to work through.

Mr Denny,

This should be easier now. I am an old hat at Microsoft issues; specifically because I have been a network admin at various levels in several companies. Admittedly, I have done very little with SQL in my life, but as a triple MCSE (NT 3.5, 4.0, 2000 Server,) I understand terminologies and am very experienced with the in-depth nuances of the OS. I will get you that info when I go down to the shop today.

As a note, we are trying not to hose the system because the store does NOT have a copy of the install files for RMS. Those seem to be lost. To you knowledge is there any way to import those data files into Excel or something and parse them?

Mr Denny, I'm back...

SO, I did a complete reinstall of this computer. Windows fresh installed. I reinstalled RMS 1.2 and am now trying to open the database associated with the store.

This is not working. When I go into Microsoft Retail Management System, Store Operations Administrator, Store Operations Administrator Configuration set it up, it gives me an login error.

For server name, I put in:
naselle-hard - (new computer name)
username - sa
password - ?
database - dbnov14_Data.mdf (old database from before problem on Aug 12. - Copied to \progra~1\microsoft sql server\mssql\data)
Connection Timeout 15.

When I click "Test Database COnnection," it gives me this error window:

Title: Connect to database
error# - 2147217843 login failed for user sa
(Source: Microsoft OLE DB provider for SQL Server)
(SQL STATE: 42000)
(Native Error: 18456)
No help file available.

Mr. Denny, can you tell me what the problem is now? it looks like a password error. I am curious, will I need the sa password for the current SQL server or for the old one (before the damage caused during Virus removal?)

Please let me know.

-Sanders-

You'll need the new sa password. You can use the SQL Enterprise Manager to change the sa password if you aren't sure what it is.
