The store computer recently had a virus , so a computer guy came to fix it. He cleaned things up and installed a new virus protection, but now we cannot connect to the POS system. When I go to connect, it gives an error message that says "cannot connect to the database". I also tried disabling the new virus protection and then connecting and that didn't work. Do you think it could be fouling things up? What should I try?
thank you so much...Lori

its still not working - and then I tried shutting down and restarting - still not working
power cycled the hub in the back office and made no difference....

Hey ! I think I found the problem - it was bugging me that yesterday I couldn't open the "services" folder in the administrative tools - so I went back to see if the flushing had made a difference. I still couldn't open it but the icon just above it is called "local security policy" and the icon looks the same as the one you click to connect to the data base. Anyway - there is a security lock on it showing it is locked. How do go abount unlocking it?
I'm hopeful this will work!

ok - that was wishful thinking - (I see now that the lock is just there as a symbol) anyway - still I find it significant that none of the files will open at all in the administraive tools section except the wizards and data sources files. Also, in case this is a clue - the "add and remove programs" application won't come up when clicked either.

We cannot get into 'computer management' in Administrative Tools. Even though we are logged in as 'Administrator', could we possibly be having a group policy issue?

ok - I don't know if this will help or not but I did some snooping around and found the following so I cut and pasted it here... the mssql shows up and that it is stopped - along with others that are stopped.

I have a question...are you trying to just log in as yourself? Every SQL Server database has a SA account. Do you have access to that? On the database server itself, log in via that account, then find your login (Security>Logins), right click and select Properties. Does your account have a default database set? Do you have permissions on the database you are trying to access?
Okay, so that's several questions.....

Bill, look at the last line of the log file. Something is stopping the SQL Server.

On the POS machine, click on start then run. Type in "cmd" without the quotes and click ok. In the command window that opens type in
Code:
NET START MSSQLSERVER
and press enter. What comes up in the box now. Are you able to use the POS software now? After you run the NET START MSSQLSERVER command, the ERRORLOG file should have changed. Can you post the new contents?

Something if definitely wrong with the computer since you can't get most of the icons in Administrative Tools to open correctly.

I'm not sure of the steps to take to get there. what exactly should I do?
thank you

Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

C:\Documents and Settings\OFFICE>net start MSSQLSERVER
The MSSQLSERVER service is starting.....
The MSSQLSERVER service could not be started.

A system error has occurred.

System error 1067 has occurred.

The process terminated unexpectedly.

C:\Documents and Settings\OFFICE>

With the service not starting, there wouldn't be a new errorlog file. Without computer management this will be tough.

Let's try another path to look at the systems logs.

Click on start then run. Type in "mmc" without the quotes and click ok. You should get a Window up that says Console1. Click on File then "Add / Remove Snap-ins". Find the Event Viewer on the left and click the arrow to move it to the right and click ok, then ok again if needed.

If everything goes correctly you should be able to see the Application, Security, and System Logs. Select the System Log and open and copy any errors (red Xs) that you see for the last couple of hours. Same goes for the Application Log. In the event log look for anything that says failure and copy that and paste all the info to the forum (it might be a lot, that's ok).

when I type the mmc the box just goes away...

I looked up system error 1067 and found a post that seemed to resolve by typing in "mySQLserver Instance Config wizard" and then going through the process. Is this something I should try?

MySQL is a different product than MSSQL. That won't help any.

System Error 1067 is a very generic error which basicaly means that the process which you attempted to start, failed for an unknown reason.

There is definitely something major wrong with the POS computer. Without knowing exactly what the guy that you had hired to work on the computer did trying to get this corrected via a forum may take a very long time, if it's even possible.

The computer unfortunately has bigger issues than the database not starting. There is something very wrong with the system since MMC (Microsoft Management Console) won't open as this is how you access most all of the management functions within Windows.

One last thing we can try, before I have to recommend you have someone local come look at the computer, would be to try booting into safe mode. When you reboot the computer, after the bios information goes buy, but before the computer says "Starting Windows" on the screen, press the F6 key on the keyboard (top row of keys). This should get you to a boot menu which gives you a few options, one of which will be safe mode. Use the arrow keys on your keyboard to change the highlighted option to Safe mode and press enter. This will boot Windows into safe mode.

Once in Safe mode see if you can get into the Computer Management window in the Administrative Tools icon in the Control Panel. If you can go to the event viewer, and look for the error messages I talked about above and copy and paste them to a notepad document. After that is done, reboot normally, and copy the information from the notepad document to the forum.

If you can't get computer management open in safe mode, your next stop will need to be a local computer professional. If you tell me what city/state you are in (assuming the US here) I might be able to recommend someone.

Denny, I'm the person who initially worked on this machine. It was infected with many viruses. It did not have current virus protection on it. Additionally regular data backups was not being done. The extent of what I did was simply removing all the viruses and installing current up to date virus protection. There has been no system changes made in any respect. Pretty odd situation indeed. Your the expert when it comes to SQL.

well darn - I went into the safe mode and it appears none of the things would open that didn't before (computer management et al)
the only thing that I can offer as new is that I typed in firewall in the search area and it shows we have norton virus protection, ad aware, windows firewall as well as the new one. It seems to me that maybe they could be in conflict? since I can't get into the add and remove programs - I can't even get in there to delete them to see ...
I sure appreciate all your help!
I'm in Naselle, Washington - closest bigger town - Asotria Oregon next bigger Longview Washington....

Something is definitely wrong with the system.

I'm putting out some feelers to see if I've got anything in Southern WA, Northern Oregon. No promises, but you never know.

Rosburg,
I didn't mean to bash on your work.

We seam to have a very sick little computer over there. It's way beyond a SQL problem. It appears that the system has become quite unstable as things like Computer Management, MMC, etc won't open. Any way you can head back over there and take a peek?

I would, but I'm about 800 miles south, so that would be a heck of a house call.

Denny, I didn't take it as bashing! I just wanted you to know exactly what was done. I'm sitting at this sick machine now, yet the store will be closing shortly. For some reason the Administrator account has lost some privilages, which certainly isn't normal. This thought I think explains why we cannot access computer management, add/remove programs, etc. I'll continue to sscratch my head, yet it is certainly looking like a reload type situation.

Sounds like one of more of the viruses didn't like getting removed, and may have trashed the place on its way out the door (not unheard of).

If you do end up paving the system, since the SQL Server isn't starting, just copy all the mdf, ndf (if any) and ldf files from the machine to a USB drive or another machine so as not to loose all the data.

We can reattach those database files and not loose anything after SQL is set back up.
