Currently running Server 2000 - Small Business Server. Workstations are either running Windows 2000 or NT4.0.
Have 2 workstations that when you go to Network Neighbourhood you can see the Domain name but are unable to see the server or any of the other workstations. One workstation is NT4.0 and the other is Windows 2000. I can map to the server on these non-working pcs no problem.
It doesn't appear to be user logon related as I can sign on to any other workstations and can view the server. But when I sign on to these 2 particular workstations can't see past the Domain tier.
Any suggestions ????

Not sure...maybe check the TCP/IP properties of these two and compare to other "working" machines in your environment.

Because the other machines seems to be working, I would guess that it's not a problem with the server(s) rather, its probably isolated to these two machines. Is there anything different about these machines compared to the other working computers (location, setup, Service Pack levels..anything).

Look through the event viewer of the problematic machines to see if any events are being logged.

The NT workstation that is "not working" has the exact setup as a working NT workstation - except of course the computer name. It has the same TCPIP settings , the working pc has service pack 5 - I have tried service packs 3 , 5 and 6a on the non-working pc to no avail.
Thanks for the reply

Try demoting them back to workgroup and after the reboot rejoin the domain.
I have run across one episode where this fixed the problem.
I could see the domain but the domain could not find me. It could see me in network neighborhood but I wasnt listed under computers.

Thanks for the info. I had tried this before I updated the service packs and it didn't work. But just tried it then on the NT workstation and it works beautifully. Any advice for the Win2000 workstation ??

Shot in the dark, but try putting the Win2k workstation into a workgroup, delete the computer account, rejoin to the domain(basically the same as shovel204 suggested).

What sp level is the Win2k box?

ollie1,

If everything seems to be ok apart from browsing - it would seem to be related to Netbios and/or the computer browser service. Check that the computer browser service is running ok on the workstation.

Check for error messages in event log relating to master browser/elections etc - might be related.

If you can learn to live without exploring network neighbourhood and start browsing through the active directory you can head towards just TCP/IP based network which is more efficient and more secure.

Hope this gives you a clue.

Cheers
