Hi Guys,

I need some help. I have a PC on my network that can't seem to get on the internet. I checked her computer and it has an IP address: 192.168.180.148 and gateway 192.168.180.240 assigned, which are the same setting that all my other users use.

Network Setup: 30 Users Lan with DHCP running.

I tried to us: route add -p 192.168.180.148 192.168.180.240

but just got an error: 87,

Some please help, this is driving me crazy!

Have you checked out IE Lan settings in the connections / Lan settings including the correct port

- Can you ping to the gateway from this computer ?
- Can you ping to the outgoing adress of the gateway (wich will probably be the internet adress). If both answers are positive you have ip-connection to the internet

- Is the proxysetting in IE the same as on the other computers ? (most of the time no proxy, I assume)

If you do ipconfig /all , do you get the same dns-settings as on the other computers ?

Hi and Thanks for the reply.
I checked the machine again. I can ping the gateway address, but i cannot ping any internet address.

Here is what I got with: IPCONFIG /ALL

Host Name . . . . . . . . . : reception.ahl.ie
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . : 192.111.39.1
192.111.39.4
Node Type . . . . . . . . . : Hybrid
NetBIOS Scope ID. . . . . . :
IP Routing Enabled. . . . . : No
WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . : No
NetBIOS Resolution Uses DNS : No

Physical Address. . . . . . : 00-10-B5-B8-D5-61
DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . : Yes
IP Address. . . . . . . . . : 192.168.180.148
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . :
DHCP Server . . . . . . . . : 192.168.180.245
Primary WINS Server . . . . : 192.168.180.20

** It is not picking up the gateway address and I don't know whay it's hotname is: reception.ahl.ie instead of just Reception, like all the other PC's......

I don't know what else to do!
Thanks again for any help you can give.

Ok,
next step : search an internet adress on another computer that responds to a ping (not all sites respond to ping). If you have found one, write down the ip-adress and try to ping from your problem-computer to this ip-adress (not to the name).
You can also try with tracert instead of ping, that's a ping to every router that is on the way to the destination. If your local firewall does not block ping to the outside world you can see already if you get on the internet.

If that works there is a problem with the DNS-resolution.

Go to your network settings (configuration screen and so on) and go to the DNS-tab. I think there is ahl.ie filled in into the domain field, isn't it ?
Compare it with a working computer.

Compare the ipconfig/all settings with another computer that works and publish a working one here if the problem still isn't solved.
