workstation cable modem to share?

Small business network running Win2k server. Basically for printer sharing and 1 application sharing. It is using DHCP. A workstation had a cable modem installed, this workstation is running Win2K Pro and we want to share this cablem modem amongst the other workstations (7 total). But when we share the connection the IP address changes and the workstation no longer sees the network. Can this be resolved?

You will need to turn DHCP off on the server, or set up RRAS on the server and have it connect to the cable modem. When you share your cable connection (ICS), it starts a "baby" version of DHCP which will conflict with the true DHCP... Also mae sure you have 2 NICS in whichever machine is hosting the connection to the internet. Matt Wray

I do have 2 nics in the workstation. The workstation is already connected to the network.

If I turn of DHCP -- How do I do this??, will all the workstations still have access to the server and printer?

To turn off DHCP, Start-> Programs-> Admin Tools-> DHCP. Right-click your server name and choose All tasks-> Stop. IF you have ICS already running on the Pro machine, do an IPCONFIG /RELEASE, IPCONFIG /RENEW on the other machines. They will all still be in the same IP range, so yes, they will still be able to "see" each other...

ICS defaults the IP for the host to 192.168.0.1 there seems to be no way to alter this behaviour (well done MS) and then expects everything else to follow. You would be better getting a copy of Winroute Pro and run that on the workstation.

I know that the IP for the host becomes 192.168.0.1, and I understand that the other machines will be able to see the workstation with the modem, but will they be able to see the server and the printer? Will disabling DHCP on the server, and have the workstation be the DHCP create a new IP address for the server? (As you can tell I am a little confused).
What is Winroute Pro?

The server will get a new IP as long as you set it to Automatically obtain an IP address. Or you can have a static one as long as it's in the same range ie. 192.168.0.x. I believe Winroute Pro is a routing program that will basically make one of your machines act as a router. For a network of only 7 machines and 1 server, I don't really think that is necessary, but that is your decision. I haven't used it myself, so I cannot say any pros or cons of it... Matt Wray
