There is one font size then another size in parenthesis:
10 pt (88 pt)
When you change the size, the first number will stay the same, but the second number changes. I have not figures out a way to change the size other than by resizing the text window. If I try to change it in the dialog box, the size comes out huge where only one letter fits.

I'm a bit confused by this. Are you looking at 10 pt type in a poster sized document? that should be greater. The number in parentheses is automatic leading. you can change that number to be a fixed value.
Try setting type to 40 and leading to 48.
