Hi!

I have a laptop that is running Win 2000 pro sp4 and it belongs to a domain. We are trying to connect this laptop to another network to use the internet. The laptop has been assigned a fixed ip to connect to the network and is able to successfully connect to the internet. But now this laptop needs to be able to share the printer that is connected to another machine in the same network that belongs to a workgroup.

The laptop can ping this desktop which is running Win XP home but when we try to connect to the printer that is shared on the desktop we get an access denied error message. Since it is a workgroup there is no way that we are able to modify any security settings if it is a security problem.

Is there a solution to this or is it an impossible to get to work kind of situation. We do not want to remove the laptop from the domain, but will it help if we remove the laptop from the domain. How does this work?

Thank you.

Chris

Chris,

Domain vs workgroup will have no affect on your ability to access the printer, just your ability to see it in Network Neighborhood. So don't remove the laptop from the domain.

Now, if the server (computer with the printer) is running XP Home, is the Guest account there activated for network use? That's all that you can do with XP Home - activate the Guest account.

Are there any firewalls on the server? What antivirus protection does it use?

One other possibility - run "ipconfig /all" on the laptop, and look at Node Type. By any chance is it "Peer-Peer"?

Cheers,

Chuck
